Horses I've Known Gallery 1
This is Cody, the first horse I had for lessons. He was a grade gelding ("grade" is the equine term for mongrel, meaning he had many breeds in his ancestry), and stood about 15 or so hands tall. (Horses are measured in hands -- a hand being equivalent to approximately 4 inches. They're measured at the withers, which is just behind the base of the neck.) Cody had a very odd personality trait -- he didn't like apples! You could put one right under his nose, and he'd turn his nose away! Cody was a very calm horse, perfect for a beginner -- especially since he was pokey! He was great to get some "mileage" on. My mom always said he reminded her of an old sofa -- the kind that you slap your hand on & dust rises, no matter how much you dust it -- because no matter how much grooming you gave this horse, he was constantly dusty!!
