Since the gerenuk is such an unusual looking animal, here's a little background info -- which I had to research! *LOL* Gerenuk means "giraffe-necked" in the Somali language. It is also called "swala twiga" or giraffe gazelle in Swahili. The males have horns. This animal is easily observed in the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya and in various other semi-arid areas of East Africa including parts of Tanzania, Somalia & Ethiopa. This lovely gal was photographed by me at the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, OH.
